Assists the RN in planning patient care by appropriately selecting supplies and equipment needed for cases. Checks that instrumentation and equipment are in working order. Maintains aseptic technique throughout set up and surgical intervention. Shows awareness of patient condition and special needs. Anticipates surgeons' needs during intraoperative phase. Maintains patient safety by adhering to fire prevention strategies. Maintains patients safety by adhering to safe medication handling strategies. Maintains safety of surgical team by safely handling sharps. Maintains patient safety by assisting with patient positioning. Maintains patient safety by assisting with patient positioning. Performs counts according to hospital policy. Initiates appropriate procedure for incorrect counts. Correctly handles and identifies surgical specimens. Safely disposes of bio-hazardous material. Actively participates in room turnover between cases. Communicates equipment/instrumentation issues to the appropriate personnel (CSS, Materials Manager, AHN, Director). Performs "down time" assignments (checking outdates, stocking, rooms, picking cases, etc.).

High School diploma or equivalent required; Accredited surgical technician program required. New York State Surgical Technician Certification required. BLS required. Prior surgical technician experience strongly preferred.
