Manager, Public Relations Brand Reputation (Internal Position)

Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS) is an integrated health care delivery system with some of the region's finest health and human services agencies. CHS includes six hospitals, three skilled nursing facilities, a regional home nursing service, hospice and a multiservice, community-based agency for persons with special needs. Under the sponsorship of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, CHS serves hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders each year, providing care that extends from the beginning of life to helping people live their final years in comfort, grace and dignity.

Responsible for developing and implementing, proactive (and at times reactive) programs that increase the awareness and build a favorable image of CHS and its brand. Responsible for supporting the development and implementation of public relations initiatives, including innovative PR campaigns to increase brand awareness and positively influence public perception. Responsible for building and maintaining essential media relationships, constructing key messages, and monitoring campaign progress and metrics. Responsible for strategic public relations support for the organization and providing support to the system's public spokesperson with media. Lead strategic public relations initiatives, building and managing relationships with key stakeholders in the community, supporting the system public and media relations function, supporting printed collateral projects, including internal and external publications. Support service line and entity public and media relations efforts with targeted communication campaigns. Coordinate with the manager of content strategy and physician communications and the manager of internal communications to develop internal communications, public relations, physician and community relations communications.


  • Champion the external communications efforts for CHS and its entities that promote and protect the brand in the marketplace.
  • Lead the development of new and innovative external communications and media strategies and channels that position CHS as the market leader.
  • Establish deep relationships with regional media outlets, including select industry and appropriate national publications.
  • Partner with the manager of content strategy and physician communications and manager of internal communications on building a brand journalism approach to telling the CHS story
  • Cultivate and maintain healthy relationships with current partners from various media disciplines--traditional-print/radio/TV, electronic e-mail and social/blogs, and communities--at the system level and supporting the local entities with their public relations and media needs.
  • Partner with digital content manager to develop and supply content to outside social sites that will promote CHS's services, reputation, brand and physicians.
  • Monitor and create timely reports measuring pickup and value of media coverage.
  • Monitor all traditional and digital media channels to measure and at times respond to mentions of CHS or its entities.
  • Build a series of toolboxes that anticipate various scenarios that can compromise CHS's reputation and brand and develop proactive detailed plans, processes, accountability and messages that will allow us to thwart any adverse coverage.
  • Develop an editorial calendar that articulates CHS media strategy and outreach allowing proactive and market-leading outreach and coverage.
  • Build a thought leadership strategy that aligns with key administrative and clinical leadership elevating our brand to regional and national platforms.
  • Assist VP and entities in the crisis communications, ensuring that all CHS leadership is well prepared for crisis situations and that the brand is favorably positioned.
  • Assist in providing consultation to corporate leadership and local hospital presidents and directors of public affairs on external communications, media relations and community relations.
  • Integrate CHS's Mission, Values and Vision into organizational messaging to ensure consistency.
  • Maintain integrity and consistency of the organizational brand standards and coordinate with marketing staff to ensure proper alignment between marketing and communications strategies.
  • Manage the overall media for the system, working with internal stakeholders, (leadership, service lines and entities) to identify and pitch stories to the media.


  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, media or related field. Advanced degree preferred.
  • 5-8 years of experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified
  • Prior hospital or health care experience.
  • Experience with strategic communication planning, concept brainstorming, campaign development & brand management
  • Experience working in public relations positions
  • Exceptional writing, editing and communications skills
  • Extensive portfolio of writing & media coverage samples required
  • Creative mindset and an understanding of relevant business issues and information needs
  • Ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines
  • Ability to thrive in a creative, fast-paced environment that emphasizes excellence and teamwork
  • Ability and willingness to adapt and thrive in a dynamic environment
  • Excellent organizational, and project management skills
  • Travel in Suffolk and Nassau counties
