The Operating Engineer-HVAC is responsible for repairing all Hospital refrigeration and air conditioning systems, using knowledge of refrigeration, function and design of system components. Adheres to Mercy Medical Centers policies and procedures


Reports at the start of the scheduled shift in uniform ready for assignments

Completes routine tasks in a timely manner

Works well in patient occupied areas when responding to calls

Can dismantle malfunctioning systems for repair and maintenance.

Replaces, adjusts, trouble shoots defective or worn parts to repair systems ranging from small commercial units to unlimited industrial refrigeration, air conditioning systems, boiler and heating components

Starts up and charges systems. Adjusts gauges, controls and mechanisms. Performs system checks for leaks and correct operation.

Assembles functional components such as motors, controls, valves, and other various HVAC and refrigeration components

Is able to Braze, weld and solder when applicable

Can perform electrical repairs and installations as they relate to HVAC and refrigeration equipment

Is able to use a wide range of hand, power, and diagnostic tools in the correct manner

Demonstrates the skills and ability to work with other trades and staff

Works overtime when required for emergencies, projects, or coverage

Logs and Communicates deficiencies to supervisors

When required performs "Snow Removal Duties"

Is able to use a wide range of hand, power, and diagnostic tools in the correct manner


Education: High School Graduate or Equivalency; Graduate of Trade School, plus 6 months in specialty training; One (1) year in a vocational school on refrigeration systems
Experience/skills: Mathematical and scientific ability/aptitude to be able to understand and perform calculations regarding alltypes of HVAC equipment; Must be able to properly understand electrical and mechanical blueprints and control schematics; Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English fluently
Licensure: Universal CFC License
